Located 5 minutes from Downton Dubai and 15 minutes from Dubai International Airport, The Gate District defined a space of left-over land between The Gate and Sheik Zayed Road. In 2008, John Burrows was invited by the DIFC to propose an environmental and leisure environment for this zone.
The regeneration of the area was a directive of the office of His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, seen as non-revenue generating area within the bustling retail and commercial zones of Dubai.
Our proposals incorporated a living canalised river connecting independent leisure and cultural zones, focusing on the sectors of health & fitness, natural planting, passive leisure and educational activities.
Due to the design conflicts over the concept for the main scheme, The Gate, the project was placed on hold and has not been revived.
